Reporting on the Senate jobs bill that is expected to reach the Senate floor next week, Martin Vaughan writes about how the federal estate tax is being used by some senators as a negotiating tool:
One looming issue that Senate leaders will have to deal with are possible amendments on the estate tax, which a bipartisan group is trying to negotiate a compromise on. Some Democratic and Republican senators might seek a commitment from [Senate Majority Leader Harry] Reid to take up estate tax legislation later in the year, in exchange for agreeing not to offer estate-tax related legislation as an amendment to the jobs bill.
